Second case of bird flu confirmed in migratory bird species, Australia

The second case of bird flu in Australia in three days has been confirmed, amid a dangerous global H5-strain outbreak. The new case was identified in a migratory seabird known as the northern giant petrel.

Both birds that tested positive were detected in an isolated area of Cape Le Grand National Park, near Esperance in the southern part of Western Australia, and both were cared for in isolation. Although bird flu has been detected in Australia before, this is the first this specific strain has been found.

The Australian Centre for Disease Control has said there is no concern for human infection frombird flu H5. https://www.skynews.com.au/australia-news/politics/officials-confirm-second-case-of-bird-flu-in-australia-in-three-days/news-story/2b293deb78b3e6ab6d49bbb074cd2a63

Influenza A(H5) in elephant seals, Australia

A highly pathogenic strain of bird flu has killed more than 13,000 southern elephant seals after infecting a breeding colony on a sub-Antarctic volcanic island, Australian scientists said Thursday.

Researchers found the remote Heard and McDonald Islands littered with seal carcasses when they arrived on a scientific expedition in October 2025.

Genetic tests confirmed that the H5 strain of bird flu had killed seals, penguins and birds that inhabit this rocky territory, in the first record of the virus in one of Australia's outer territories.

Southern elephant seal calves were the hardest hit by the outbreak, Australian Antarctic Program specialists said. In some seal breeding groups, mortality reached up to 97 percent.

Land and aerial surveys conducted between October 2025 and January 2026 counted the deaths of 13,300 elephant seal calves.

West Nile fever virus , Russia

The virus enters the country through two main routes: from Africa via the southern Black Sea coast, and from Central and Eastern Europe via Hungary and Romania. Migratory birds and mosquitoes are the vectors.

Scientists have recorded the emergence of various genetic variants of the pathogen in Tatarstan, Moscow, Krasnodar Krai, Astrakhan, Rostov, Volgograd, and Oryol Oblasts.

The dominant virus subtype has been identified in 17 regions of Russia. The dominant strain, ABB.1.1, is actively expanding its range north and east. https://informpskov.ru/news/510630.html

Second screwworm case in a one-month-old calf confirmed miles from first Texas detection, US

A second case of the flesh-eating screwworm parasite was confirmed in Texas by the US Department of Agriculture on Friday, emerging just miles from where the first US detection in decades was reported this week, reported Reuters.

The new case in Zavala County was detected on a ranch 5.6 miles (9 km) from the first positive case of screwworm in Texas, which the USDA confirmed on Wednesday.

The infection, which the USDA said was in a one-month-old calf, was reported earlier on Friday by Reuters, citing sources.

The USDA discovered the second infestation "after testing a number of suspect cases," the department's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service said in a press release. https://www.thedairysite.com/news/second-screwworm-case-confirmed-miles-from-first-texas-detection

New World screwworm, USA

A calf in southern Texas tested positive for the New World screwworm, the first instance of the deadly fly-borne parasite detected in U.S. livestock since 1966. The Agriculture Department confirmed late Wednesday that New World screwworm fly larvae were found in a 3-week-old calf in Zavala County, Texas. The flesh-eating parasite can be deadly to animals but isn't common among humans and isn't a food safety risk, the USDA said.Earlier this week a case was reported in the Mexican state of Coahuila, found in a goat 25 miles away from the border. Wednesday's finding represented the first U.S. case of any kind since 2016, when an outbreak occurred in the wild deer population in Florida.

According to the ministry's latest update on the outbreak, the six new cases were identified among contacts of previously confirmed patients. Twelve Ebola patients are currently hospitalized in treatment facilities, while two patients have been discharged after recovery, the ministry said. The East African country declared the latest Ebola outbreak in May after confirming two imported cases of the Ebola virus disease, including one death. Health authorities are currently monitoring 668 contact cases linked to those confirmed as part of efforts to contain the spread of the disease, according to the update. Charles Olaro, director general of health services at the Health Ministry, on Monday urged those with Ebola-like symptoms to get to health facilities quickly, saying the chances of survival are higher.
